Candace Cunningham, LMHC

Welcome! As a queer Black woman, I know it can be difficult to feel safe enough to show up authentically and take down the protective armor. My passion is serving the communities I am part of as a guide, so my clients do not have to do it alone. I specialize in working with folks who struggle feeling safe within themselves or others and want support to feel more aligned with their emotions and their bodies. My work focuses on connecting the mind and body to process trauma and I do so by tailoring my approach to address each client’s specific needs.

In addition to running my private practice, I am co-owner of Embrace Counseling Consultants, a mental health consultation company providing workshops and training to schools and companies focused on anxiety, self-care, boundary setting, and mindfulness. Outside of my clinical work, you can see me reading, binge watching tv shows and movies, or outside connecting with nature and dogs.

My Clinical Experience

I obtained my bachelor’s degree in Psychology at the University of Missouri-Columbia and continued on to receive my Master of Arts and Master of Education in Mental Health Counseling from Teachers College, Columbia University. I have specialized training in Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR) and Integrative Somatic Trauma Therapy from the Embody Lab.

In addition to EMDR and somatic therapy, I incorporate Psychodynamic, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and relational techniques depending on individual need. I have experience in community based organizations, private practice, and schools within New York City. My clinical work prioritizes supporting emerging adults, BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ communities, and folks who experience anxiety, depression, and various trauma.

My Approach

  • Intersectional

I honor and hold space for all the identities you hold/are in community with. Together we will explore the layers in which your identities impact your relationship with yourself, others, and the world we live in.

  • Holistic

The impact of trauma or any mental health struggle does not show up in just one way. The journey of healing shouldn’t either. The work we do will account all parts of you including physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wellness to heal in a deeper, embodied way.

  • Somatic

Our bodies provide us with cues about how we perceive the world at any given moment. My aim in sessions is to work together to slow down and learn what your body cues mean for your beliefs about yourself, your emotions, and interactions with others.
